It is said that ballet is a universal language because it expresses itself through gesture and movement. The language of ballet technique is French because it got its start in the French court of Catherine de Medici and flourished there for centuries. Ballet reflects many international influences given the great companies and wonderful dancers produced by lots of countries including America, Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia-even Iceland, to name just a few. That said, titles of ballets can sometimes be tongue twisters! For those of us who sometimes struggle with a word or pronunciation here or there, below is a list of the more challenging titles taken from New York City Ballet's repertory.
